Disk write error updating partition table

A common and befuddling problem with computers is the sudden and seemingly inexplicable disappearance of an external hard drive that has been functioning properly. Then you can rule out physical damage that requires repair with specialized tools in a controlled environment. In order to repair the most common problems that cause an external disk to suddenly become RAW we will use Test Disk.

Boot the Mac as usual and relaunch Disk Utility to verify the disk.

As with many similar situations in life the appropriate response is “Don’t panic”. Sometimes that information is difficult to come by and can be proprietary. If that is the case, select EFI GPT instead and try that.) Press Q to go back a screen and then press enter to get to this screen.

When approached sensibly and carefully, the situation can be resolved and the data saved more times than not. For example, the formulas for how some manufacturers calculate normalized values for attributes can be very difficult to find. Select WRITE and press enter in order to write our new partition table to the drive.

The cause of this remains to be seen, and repairing the disk from Disk Utility itself doesn’t work, even when in Single User Mode or when booting from another drive.

Do note that “fsck” can take a while to run and complete, depending on the size of the drive.

A program might include multiple overlays that occupy the same memory at different times.

Overlays are not a method of paging RAM to disk but merely of minimizing the program's use of RAM.

These pages became the units exchanged between disk and RAM.
